On June 24, 2021, at approximately 1:22 a.m., tragedy struck the Miami suburb of Surfside, Florida, when the Champlain Towers South, a 12-story beachfront condominium, partially collapsed. The disaster claimed the lives of 98 people, making it one of the deadliest structural failures in U.S. history. The collapse destroyed 55 of the building's 136 units and triggered an urgent search and rescue operation, with firefighters managing to save 35 people from the uncollapsed portion before it too was demolished for safety reasons.
